An Artesian Aquifer is bounded above and below by impermeable materials or materials of distinctly lower permeability than the aquifer itself. Like a straw in a glass, water confined in this manner will rise up through a drilled hole or well casing above the point of initial penetration (above the bottom of the confining, or impermeable, layer overlying the aquifer).
